Should India ban Pakistani artists?

I would say otherwise. We should not let the political dynamics between countries influence our one to one individual interaction and ideological differences. Despite presuming that the current Pakistan political-military establishment holds an ideological antipathy towards India, India should let Pakistani artists work as long as it falls within the legal purview and framework.

I would say, we ought to build that one to one individual relationship with Pakistani nationals, irrespective of the conflagration and juggernaut existing between the two countries.

After the internal turmoil evoked ‘Post Uri’, rhetoric’s and the surgical strikes, it’s obviously a natural knee jerk reaction to say ‘No’ – We don’t keep any relations with Pakistan and it’s Citizen?

I would say otherwise. We should not let the political dynamics between countries influence our one to one individual interaction and ideological differences. Despite presuming that the current Pakistan political-military establishment holds an ideological antipathy towards India, India should let Pakistani artists work as long as it falls within the legal purview and framework.

I would say, we ought to build that one to one individual relationship with Pakistani nationals, irrespective of the conflagration and juggernaut existing between the two countries.

Let’s step back and understand the build up to current conflagration is a byproduct of the establishment, a compromised democracy where the army rules and dictates. It’s the army and not the common man, who is responsible. In fact, they are the ones that are deprived. Especially in the case of Pakistan, where democracy never had an opportunity to anchor and prosper, we sincerely have to give dual benefit of doubt. So the current struggle is not with Pakistani (Citizen) but with Pakistan (Establishment).

Understand, common man, be it any country, region or religion, has those same patterns. Their concerns, aspirations, anxieties and struggle are same as ours. Their happiness is the same as ours. Our rouse is against Pakistani establishment, not against their citizen, especially in the case of Pakistan, where they lack that ability to mold the political opinion. If they are legally here, they work within the legal framework, then they should not be declined the opportunity to work in Bollywood.

Ok, if you are still not convinced, let me ask you? In a hypothetical situation, if Indian Government commits a grave situation and US decided to send back all those innocent who emigrated from India, would you support that?

If you are still not convinced, let me ask yet another question. What if few Indian citizens commit a grave crime, do you think India US or any country where that hypothetical situation happens, should cut all diplomatic ties despite the Indian Government being on right foot?

Someone may naturally ask, will they treat Hrithik Roshan the same? Well, let’s not collude our value systems even if the answer is no. To be true, if the politicians or radicals don’t force their opinion, you will most likely see Pakistani voting to see him perform in Pakistan.

Well, let’s differentiate between Citizen and Ruling elite. We can’t preach love, at least let’s treat every citizen with dignity and opportunity. We expect the same and we should reciprocal the same. Let the merit of their performance decide where they ought to be in the Industry. Well, if we differentiate citizen from establishment, I believe, that will embolden our faith in having them continue as artist in India.

Art, like sublime thoughts defining philosophy, transpires humanity. Artists attempt to cross those barriers of religious, geopolitical boundaries, at times which become timeless and invaluable. Boundaries and affiliations have a finite span and keep changing, whereas art remains within the realms of humanity. Such is a supreme nature of art. An artist is an object of depicting those abstract expressions. Fortunately for us, artists are the medium and we humans are bestowed with the supreme sense of that expression. While, it is true that these artists originate in Pakistan, this notion of region is self-defeating and limited. While appreciate art and artist, we should cross those barrier that limit our perception towards art and artists.

With love towards India – Ash

  1. If India starts sponsoring regular terrorism in US, all Indian citizens will be definitely sent back. It is not the matter of just one or two grave crimes by Pakistanis, India Pakistan situation is totally different.

  2. What if these Pakistani artists are acting as spy in India..If you remember Sarfarosh movie, it is quite possible..It is better for them to go. We should not compromise our security and peace of the country for entertainment.

    1. Immigrating legally and working within the legal framework are mandatory for their work and stay in India. It is wrong if your kids/sibling etc. are sent back from any country just because India has committed an offense. We need to also see from this perspective.

  3. I was looking for the author’s name but I couldn’t find, so “mymilieu.org” the thought you have put here is same as mine. It is the intelligence and the depth of thinking which separates common from special. I agree completely with what you said here but sadly most of our citizens wouldn’t. In the globalized world we need to handle almost every situation diplomatically, considering not just the present but future outcomes as well.

Decision to ban Pakistani artists shows the true mentality of some well educated ones. It is clear from this that better education doesn’t necessarily mean better thinking. There are so many Pakistani artists in Hollywood today and they are doing well. Has USA asked them to leave? No. An artist once become famous no more is known from his nationality but his work. To common citizen, “When you go out to buy a packet of bread do you look for the region it has come from or its quality, i think most would look for quality then why nationality of an artist, look for his work.”

    1. Shashikant, I am happy to know we share similar opinion. We all may differ on the resolution on root cause but I strongly feel, we haven’t exhausted all possible options and means of resolutions before accepting adopting aggressive policy of defending our borders. Ash Heda, Dallas, Texas.

    2. Let Pakistan sponsor continuous terrorism through militant outfits like LeT and JeM in USA. Let them fuel insurgency in USA. I am sure that all Pakistanis will be sent back from USA also. Lot of innocent Muslims were tortured in USA after 9/11.

      1. Despite several incidences of terrorism related to their origin to Pakistan, US has never subjected its law abiding Citizen/s of Pakistani origin to unwarranted treatment or castigated them for their country of origin. Instead, it has engaged with the Pakistani administration to address those issues. Since 2011, their funding to the country has decreased dramatically, however, I haven’t seen any policy where privileges of its citizen (of Pakistani origin) are disrobed.

Radical and terrorist elements reflect less than 1% of their law abiding normal population. However, when we adopt a religious bias, we subjugate these law abiding 99% Muslims to unwanted bias and consequent hardship.

We really need to differentiate between radical and terrorist and common citizen and, we need to discern between a country and its citizen. Unfortunately, for a common man, that differentiation is difficult.

  4. Pakistan conspiring against India since its formation, training militants and sending them to harm India, trying to break away Kashmir, destabilize India, sponsoring drug mafia, underworld, constant LOC firing..For a common emotional Indian, it is hard to appreciate art, dance and music from Pakistan in such a hostile situation. Not everyone can be like Mahatma Gandhi and there is no need also..

    1. While the frustration on Pakistan’s approach towards India is truly frustrating, Pakistani citizen have little to influence the politico-military establishment. In fact, the establishment influences their opinion and decided the direction of the country.

While the sentiments of common Indian citizen are understandable, those same sentiments cannot be used in running policies and defining international interaction.

We don’t have to be Mahatma to adopt good deeds. We simply have to look within to adopt eternal truth.
